The singles from I Am… Sasha Fierce album "If I Were a Boy" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" were initially targeted to radio on October 7, 2008; however, the singles were premiered on the following day on selected radio stations in the United States. On the same day, a video was released by Beyonce Knowles' record label Columbia, featuring footage on the making of the music videos to "If I Were a Boy" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", and the photo shoot for the two singles and the album.

A deluxe edition of I Am… Sasha Fierce album, which contains bonus tracks, was released simultaneously with the standard version. Mathew Knowles held a listening party for the album in New York on October 22, 2008. Prior to the album's earliest release date, the entire album was premiered on November 11, 2008 through Knowles' MySpace account.

A Spanish-language interpretation of "If I Were A Boy" entitled "Si Yo Fuera un Chico", as well as "El Amor De Mi Vida", are the only confirmed tracks to be included on this issue. Until said full anthology is released, a DVD/CD EP called Above and Beyoncé: Dance Mixes was released on June 16.

To correspond with the double album release, Columbia Records created a teaser website for Sasha Fierce. The website features a contest where fans are given the chance to describe Beyoncé's alter ego, Sasha Fierce.

There is also plans to release I Am... Sasha Fierce Platinum Edition which will include the original deluxe edition track listing however there will be 4 new songs including the "Ego" remix featuring Kanye West and the Billy Joel cover to "Honesty". A DVD will also be included in the Platinum Edition, with eight music videos recorded so far. The Beyonce-album cover was released on July 30

I Am... Tour

In early October 2008, Billboard magazine announced that Knowles was embarking on a world wide tour to support her new album. The tour kicked off in Edmonton, Canada on March 26, 2009. The European leg of the tour started on April 26, 2009 in Zagreb, Croatia, and will end on June 9, 2009 in London, England the last of a string of sold out shows in the UK. For the third leg of the tour Beyonce travels through North America starting on June 21, 2009 in the first of two shows in New York City, USA and then finishes in August with a 4-day stint at the Encore Theater, at Encore Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Strip. After a short break she takes her tour to parts of Asia and Australia, starting on September 12, 2009 in Brisbane, Australia and finishing on September 24 in Perth, Australia. Knowles then returns to Europe (mainly England) to do few more shows. On November 15, 2009 a special concert will be held at the 0₂ Arena in London. This concert is sponsored by Cadbury's Trident chewing gum. The audience for this event will be made up entirely of competition winners.

In The Madonna Companion, biographer Andrew Metz noted that more than any other recent pop artist, she had used MTV and music videos to establish her popularity and enhance her recorded work. According to him, many of her songs have the imagery of the music video in strong context while referring to the music. The media and oublic reaction towards her most-discussed songs like "Papa Don't Preach", "Like a Prayer" or "Justify My Love", had to do with the music videos created to promote the song and their impact, rather than the song in itself. Her career started in 1984, the same time that MTV also started. Madonna's initial music videos reflected her American and Hispanic mixed street style and a flamboyant glamour. Essentially a dancer, she expressed this imagery through Madonna's music videos. With Madonna's 1st real music videos for songs like "Burning Up", "Borderline" and "Lucky Star", she transmitted her avant-garde downtown New York fashion sense to the American audience. Madonna continued w/ the imagery and incorporation of Hispanic culture and Catholic symbolism with the music videos from the True Blue era. Author Douglas Kellner noted, "such 'multiculturalism' and her culturally transgressive moves turned out to be highly successful moves that endeared MAdonna to large and varied youth audiences". Her Spanish look in the videos became popular and appeared in the fashion trends at that time in the form of boleros and layered skirts accessorizing with rosary beads and crucifix like the video. Academics noted that with her videos, she was subtlely reversing the usual role of male as the dominant s*x and destabilizing the usual power relationship between the "voyeuristic male gaze and object". This symbolism and imagery was probably the most prevalent in the music video for "Like a Prayer". The video included an African American church choir, she "turning on" a statue of a black saint and singing in front of burning crosses. This mix of the sacred and the profane upset the Vatican and resulted in the Pepsi commercial withdrawal. From being in boy-toy girlish roles of Madonna's earliest videos to the s*xual persona in videos for "Justify My Love" and "Express Yourself", she represented herself as someone who is unfazed by the cultures and the struggles Madonna has endured. Devoid of this, Madonna portrayed herself to be dancing off-screen to the music at the end of the video. MAdonna's re-invention has continued in her most recent videos like "Ray of Light", which was lauded with the video of the year award at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards.

On October 29, 2002, after much delay, her 2nd full-length English album, Stripped, was released, selling more than 330,000 copies in the 1st week and peaking at number two on the Billboard 200. Unlike previous work, Stripped album showcased her raunchier side. The majority of Stripped was co-written by her (who had recently signed a global music publishing contract with BMG Music Publishing), and was influenced by many different subjects and music styles, including contemporary R&B, gospel, soul, balladry, pop rock, and hip hop. The majority of Stripped album was produced by Scott Storch and singer-songwriter Linda Perry who produced her more personal records. Rockwilder and singer Alicia Keys also contributed a track each. Upon initial release, Stripped album was very well-received by critics, although Christina Aguilera's vocals were overlooked as Christina Aguilera began to cultivate a more s*xually provocative image. After the release of the album, Christina Aguilera took part in photoshoots for magazines, many of these photographs featured her nade or semi-nade. Christina Aguilera cover for Rolling Stone, featured the singer only wearing boots and a well-placed electric guitar. It was during this time she referred to herself as "Xtina", even getting a tattoo of Christina Aguilera's nickname on the back of her neck and several piercings.

Initially, the raunchy image had a negative effect on Christina Aguilera in the U.S., especially after the release of her controversial "Dirrty" music video. Christina Aguilera denied that this change was a matter of publicity, claiming that the image better reflected her true personality than did the image she cultivated back in 1999. While the video for "Dirrty" became very popular on MTV, it disappointed on the U.S. singles chart. However, the single was a hit worldwide, reaching #1 in the UK and Ireland. The 2nd single, "Beautiful" received critical praise. The classically influenced ballad reached #1 in several countries and peaked at number two in the US. "Beautiful" earned Aguilera the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. 3 more singles ("Fighter", "Can't Hold Us Down" featuring Lil' Kim, "The Voice Within") were released in the following two years and were hits that helped the album stay on the charts for the next two years. Stripped stayed on the U.S. and UK album charts well into 2004, and went on to be certified four-times platinum in the U.S. with over twelve million copies sold worldwide. It appeared at number ten on Billboard's year-end album chart. Kelly Clarkson's 2nd single "Miss Independent" was co-written by her, having been half-finished for Stripped.

She joined Justin Timberlake that June on the final leg of his international Justified tour, held in the U.S. This portion of the tour became a co-headliner called the "Justified & Stripped Tour". In August, an overhead lighting grid collapsed from the ceiling of the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, causing major damage to the sound and video equipment below. Because the collapse occurred hours before the show, only a few stagehands were injured, but a few shows were cancelled or postponed. In the fourth quarter of that year, Christina Aguilera continued to tour internationally without Timberlake, and changed the name of the tour to the "Stripped World Tour". Christina Aguilera also dyed her hair black. It was one of the top-grossing tours of that year, and sold out most of its venues. Rolling Stone readers named it the best tour of the year. She was a special guest performer with the Pussycat Dolls' dance troupe and appeared on a Maxim spread alongside them. Christina Aguilera's 2nd Maxim cover that year set record sales for the issue, by the end of the year she topped the annual Hot 100 list later saying, "We had fun working with certain clothes, or the lack thereof." After much delay, her 1st DVD live-recording from a concert tour, Stripped Live in the UK, was released in November 2004.

In light of the tour's success, another U.S. tour was scheduled to begin in mid-2004 with a new theme. The tour however was scrapped because of the vocal cord injuries Christina Aguilera suffered shortly before the tour's opening date. In a tribute to Madonna's performance at the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards, she performed a kiss with the singer-actress at the 2003 edition of the ceremony in August. The incident occurred during the opening performance of Madonna's songs "Like a Virgin" and "Hollywood" with fellow popstar Britney Spears.

Beyonce Knowles worked on the album for nearly a year, longer than Beyonce had spent on her previous solo albums and records with former group Destiny's Child. She revealed that she had co-written and co-produced over seventy songs. In a statement released on Knowles' official website, she wrote:

"I am in a different place right now and I wanted people to see the many sides of me. The music is upbeat for the dance, fun side and it is reflective, passionate and serious for the personal side. I have taken risks here. I am not afraid and my music will explain it all. There is no label or tag on my sound. It's me and I am so excited to share it with the world on November 18."

Knowles' father-manager, Mathew, explained the two-disc album, saying, "Beyoncé was adamant—and she has complete creative control—about dividing her songs. She felt she couldn't mix the songs together. She's in a much different space now than she was one year ago. She's married and in a really good place and this album reflects that." Sessions with producers Timbaland-protégé Danjahandz and The Neptunes were also said to take place, but their records did not make the final cut.

Sasha Fierce

The album formally introduces Knowles' alter-ego Sasha Fierce. Knowles said that Sasha was "born" during the making of her 2003 hit single "Crazy in Love." In an interview with Entertainment Weekly magazine, Knowles noted that her alter-ego is "strictly for the stage." The magazine has described it as "the singer's sensual, aggressive alter ego."

Knowles wears a "roboglove" in public to compliment Sasha Fierce. It was Knowles' concept, and New York-based jeweler Lorraine Schwartz made the titanium glove. It consists of several pieces, including a ring, a glove, and a separate component that covers Knowles' upper arm. The glove first appeared in the video for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)". Knowles later wore it on the red carpet during the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, on her performance at the Saturday Night Live show, on the cover of Gotham magazine, and in the music video to "Diva".

One side has songs that are more mainstream and another has my more traditional R&B songs for my fans who've been there the whole time. Some of it sounds like Barbra Streisand, Karen Carpenter and the Beatles around the 1970s." Beyonce Knowles explained at The Oprah Winfrey Show that the difference between I Am... Sasha Fierce and Knowles' earlier solo albums is that it includes more ballads. It is Knowles' first album not to feature any duets or collaborations. The second disc, Sasha Fierce features 80's synthpop, electropop, and electro displayed in songs like "Radio", "Diva", "Sweet Dreams", "Scared of Lonely", and "Video Phone". The songs "Single Ladies", "Radio", "Diva", and "Video Phone The track "Smash Into You", from the Deluxe edition, is played during the credits at the end of the movie Obsessed, in which Knowles stars.
